TOPIC: MIDI hardware support

MIDI hardware support 2 years 10 months ago #3

MIDI devices are handled by the ALSA subsystem.

The USB-MIDI class compliant devices are handled by usb-audio driver that implements the official specifications. MIDI devices can be connected on any bus: USB, PCI(e), FireWire, Thunderbolt, ...

The Audio/MIDI device support depend on the linux kernel. Not all existing devices can be used. A table of support can be found at ALSA SoundCards. Be aware that some devices require firmware to work properly.

New versions of the Linux kernel support an increasing number of hardware devices without ever forgetting the older devices that work always good.

The product BenchmarkMIDI uses the latest kernel and supports the new devices. See BenckmarkMIDI for a complete list of Audio/MIDI ALSA devices.

In practice, if a MIDI device appears in the DIY NetMIDI EGP "net-console" then it means that it works.
